1910: The Turning Point in Brindaban Matri Mandir’s Barowari Puja History

A story preserved in an old Kolkata Puja directory

The history of a century-old Puja cannot always be reduced to a founding year.

For Brindaban Matri Mandir, 1910 marks a particularly significant turning point because an old published account describes what happened around that year: an established household Durga Puja in Sukia Street faced disruption, local residents were disappointed at the possibility of losing the Puja, and several individuals took the initiative to organise a new Puja in the name of Brindaban Matri Mandir.

The account appears on pages 21 and 22 of the “Kolkata Sarbojonin Pujo Directory.”

This article follows that source.

The household Puja in Sukia Street

The publication refers to a Puja associated with the family of Indubhushan Mukherjee in Sukia Street.

It was known locally as the Mukherjee family's Puja.

In 1910, however, the Puja encountered an unspecified obstacle.

The possibility that the annual celebration would not take place left people in the neighbourhood disappointed.

That disruption became the starting point for what followed.

The people who stepped forward

According to the directory, several individuals took the initiative rather than allowing the Puja tradition to disappear that year.

The names recorded include:

  • Babu Pramathanath Chattopadhyay

  • Babu Nirmal Krishna Mitra

  • Babu Hari Narayan Mukherjee

  • Babu Mahendra Nath Srimani

Together with other local organisers, they initiated a Puja in the name of Brindaban Matri Mandir in the field in front of the Mitra family's house.

This is the central event recorded in the source.

The setting changed from a household to a wider neighbourhood gathering.

The move towards a Barowari Puja

The directory describes this development as the transformation of the household Puja into a Barowari Puja.

It further states that, at that time, the Brindaban Matri Mandir Puja was the only Barowari Durga Puja in that locality.

The distinction is important because the change was not simply about where the rituals were performed.

The organisation of the celebration had moved beyond one household and towards participation by the surrounding community.

Durga Puja and revolutionary activity in the same period

The same section of the publication records another practice associated with the period.

According to the account, revolutionaries would gather at one place and organise a ten-day Durga Puja while discussing and determining their future course of action.

Ten people would take part in the worship in the role of priests. The source states that only two were genuine priests, while the others were revolutionaries who used the setting to meet, converse and plan their next activities.

This passage should be read as historical context from the source, not as a statement that Brindaban Matri Mandir itself was a centre of revolutionary activity.

That distinction matters when preserving an archival record.

The wider social role of public Puja

The following page discusses another aspect of Kolkata's Barowari Puja culture.

The publication states that, under British rule, creating a sense of nationalism among local residents was an indirect objective behind some such gatherings.

A public Puja brought people from the neighbourhood together in one place. According to the source, revolutionaries used that opportunity for their own purposes.

The statement belongs to the historical interpretation presented in the directory. It should not be treated as a present-day political position of Brindaban Matri Mandir.

The 1930s and the growth of public celebrations

The directory also refers to the Hatibagan Sarbojanin Durgotsav Committee.

According to the account, its journey began in the 1930s, during a period when the desire for Indian independence was becoming increasingly prominent.

The publication presents the public Puja of that era as more than a religious gathering. It describes a connection between Bengali emotion, cultural tradition and the aspirations associated with independence.

This provides useful background for understanding the changing character of Kolkata's neighbourhood-based Durga Puja.

What the 1910 record tells us

The importance of the Brindaban Matri Mandir story lies not simply in the year 1910.

The surviving account gives us a sequence of events:

A household Puja → disruption in 1910 → disappointment in the neighbourhood → local initiative → a new Puja in front of the Mitra family's house → the name Brindaban Matri Mandir → a Barowari form.

That sequence offers something more substantial than a founding date.

It shows how a neighbourhood celebration could change its organisational character when local people stepped in to continue it.

Why this record deserves preservation

Many histories of old Durga Pujas begin with a date, a family name or a location.

The 1910 account offers another layer.

It records the circumstances that led to a new arrangement and names several of the people associated with that initiative.

For Brindaban Matri Mandir, this makes the source valuable not merely as an old reference, but as part of the documented history of neighbourhood Durga Puja in North Kolkata.
